A new estimate says the record summer heat in Texas cost the state's economy $24 billion. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Lone Star State's punishing and record-breaking heat wave, coupled with an unyielding drought, significantly affected local businesses and, by extension, the state's economy. For every 1-degree increase in average summer temperature, Texas sees a 0.4% slowdown in its annual nominal GDP growth. Notable establishments like Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld, and Six Flags blamed their dips in summer visitors on the heat wave. Photo: Alpen Glow CreativeTO PAULA REYNOLDS, 69, the prospect of driving down bone-rattling dirt roads and camping in wild swaths of the American West did not sound like a dream vacation. She expressed perfectly reasonable skepticism when her sons, Adam, 39, and Andy, 34, suggested renting an “overlanding” vehicle for a week-long backcountry adventure through Colorado and Utah to celebrate their dad’s 70th birthday. According to Adam, they “really had to sell her on being able to see these untouched landscapes” and reassure her that they’d have a whole team behind them, with route-planning and emergency satellite communications.

LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Sepp Kuss's unlikely victory in La Vuelta a Espana could provide a timely boost for a flagging road cycle racing scene in the United States, according to Chris Horner whose 2013 triumph Kuss emulated on Sunday. The 29-year-old Kuss entered the race as a 'domestique' for more illustrious Jumbo-Visma team mates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The road race scene is hardly booming in the U.S with few stage-racing opportunities for up-and-coming riders after the demise of the Tour of California, Colorado and Utah. "The racing scene in the U.S. is drowning or at best its nose is over the water. They were having meetings before the race, during the race, after the race, and then before everyone went to bed.

Oregon State and Washington State on Friday filed a complaint in Washington state court against the Pac-12 and Commissioner George Kliavkoff, seeking to prevent departing member schools from taking any actions that could stand in the way of the Pacific Northwest schools' effort to rebuild the conference. Each school has cited the desire for more financial stability in abandoning the “Conference of Champions” and leaving only Oregon State and Washington State.
